A LANDLORD'S OUTSTANDING ELECTRICITY BILL CAN NOT BE ENFORCED ON A TENANT-NERC

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission NERC on Wednesday asserted that a tenant can not be forced to pay his landlord's outstanding electricity bill.

Nathan Shatti, NERC Commissioner, Finance and Management Services disclosed this on Wednesday, September 16, during a live programme on "meters and metering."

He further urged consumers who are in similar situations to reach out to the commission.

"A Landlord's outstanding electricity bills cannot be enforced on a tenant.

A judge recently ruled that the bills of a previous tenant cannot be enforced on a new customer.Send us details if you are in such situations.

~Commissioner Nathan Shatti," NERC tweeted.

It seems NERC would be inundated with cases as many consumers have responded on social media that they are forced to pay outstanding electricity bills or risk having a power cut.

Things got interesting when someone tagged the Abuja electricity distribution company on Twitter.

"WHY IS @NERCNG SAYING ONE THING AND DICSO @AEDCELECTRICITY DOING ANOTHER? ARE WE NOT BEING SCAMMED?," someone asked on Twitter.

Abuja Electricity Distribution responded saying: "Hello, please be informed that once a property has accrued debts on the account. It continues to reflect untill it is cleared. However, the tenants is supposed to have a discussion with the landlord on how to clear off their outstanding debt."
