GHANA GOVERNMENT SAYS IT WILL PUNISH INDIVIDUALS WHO DEMOLISHED A NIGERIAN HIGH COMMISSION BUILDING IN ACCRA

The Ghana Government says it is working on unravelling how unidentified people breached the premises of the Nigeria High Commission in Accra and demolished one of its building under construction.

In a press release issued on Saturday, June 20, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is investigating the incident and would bring the perpetrators to book.

On the night of Friday, June 19, some persons gained access to the premises of the Nigeria High Commission in Accra which houses the High Commissioner's residence and four other buildings.

In a video made available to Eons Intelligence, some members of staff of the Nigeria High Commission in Ghana alleged that when the demolition was going on in the early hours of Saturday morning, they made frantic calls to the police in Ghana, but no security personnel showed up.

"The Ministry views, with concern, this development which is a breach of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (VCDR, 1961)," the statement read.

The Ghana Government said it has beefed up security in the facility and promised the Diplomatic community in Ghana, and the Nigeria High Commission in particular of their safety.

"Whilst expressing regrets over the incident, the Ministry wishes to reassure the Diplomatic community in Ghana and the Nigeria High Commission in particular, that Ghana remains a law-abiding country that upholds the principle of the rule of law, where due process is followed at all times. The Government will, therefore, not relent on its primary obligation to guarantee the safety of Members of the Diplomatic Corps in Ghana."
