"The new Oba-elect until his election was the Commissioner for Agriculture of our state and one of the longest serving members of the state cabinet."

Since the demise of Oba Idowu Abiodun Oniru in September 2019, there has been an ongoing tussle over who would wear the crown.

The son of the late Oba, Adesegun Oniru, and Hakeem Ajasa, a retired police officer were the strongest contenders for the throne.

Lawal, 50 obtained a degree in Botany from the University of Port Harcourt at the age of 22.

He later switched careers and joined the police where he was commissioned as a cadet Assistant Superintendent.

From 1999 to 2003, Lawal served as ADC to Tinubu who was then Governor of Lagos State.

He later retired from the police in 2008 to further his education overseas and obtained a post-graduate degree in Violence, Conflict and Development from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

Lawal also served as Senior Special Assistant on Special Projects and Commissioner for Agriculture during the Babatunde Fashola Administration.

Former Governor of Lagos, Akinkunmi Ambode also appointed him Commissioner for Housing in 2015.

The new monarch was serving as Commissioner for Agriculture in Lagos until yesterday.

After his coronation, Prince Wasiu Gbolahan Lawal would become the 16th Oniru of Iruland.
