Troops foil mass abduction, rescue nine civilians
Troops of Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have foiled an attempted mass abduction in Unguwar Rogo Village, Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, rescuing nine civilians, including an infant.
The incident occurred on 16 August 2026 after troops received a distress call reporting that terrorists, allegedly led by suspected kingpin Mallam Shuaibu, had attacked civilians travelling along a local route in the community.
Report indicates that the attack may have been carried out as retaliation for the recent arrest of suspected collaborators linked to the terrorist network. The suspects were reportedly intercepted earlier while attempting to procure motorcycles and Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) allegedly intended to support the group’s operations.
The terrorists reportedly concealed themselves in a millet farm along the route before opening fire on passing vehicles, causing some drivers to lose control and veer off the road.
Troops of Sector 2 swiftly responded to the distress call and engaged the attackers, preventing them from carrying out the planned abduction. The terrorists reportedly abandoned their operation and fled into the surrounding forest following the troops’ intervention.
Nine civilians, including an infant, were subsequently rescued. Two women who sustained gunshot injuries during the attack were evacuated for medical treatment and are currently receiving care.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA reaffirmed its commitment to sustained offensive operations against terrorist networks and other criminal elements across the North-West, with a focus on protecting civilians and restoring lasting peace and security in the region.
