Customs Hands Over 1,625 Parcels of Cannabis, Details Seizures Worth Over N1.2 Billion

The Ogun 1 Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Idiroko, on Tuesday transferred 1,625 parcels of cannabis sativa to the Ogun State Command of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The intercepted contraband included 780 coconut-sized parcels, 225 book-sized parcels, and 160 bread-sized parcels. The handover took place at the NCS Centenary Quarters in Idiroko and was received by the Narcotic Commander of the NDLEA Idiroko Special Area Command, Adeyeye Olusegun.

In addition to the cannabis seizure, the anti-smuggling unit of the NCS confiscated a range of items over a 27-day period in 2025. These included:

  • 2,002 bags of foreign parboiled rice, each weighing 50kg.
  • 6,180 cutlasses.
  • 6,375 litres of petroleum products.

During the handover ceremony, Comptroller Mohammed Shuaibu, the Area Controller for Ogun 1 Command, credited the seizures to intelligence-driven operations and the dedication of the operatives.

2024 Scorecard of the Ogun 1 Command

Highlighting the command's performance in 2024, Shuaibu revealed additional confiscations, including:

  • 16,712 bags of foreign parboiled rice (50kg each).
  • 139,881 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
  • 940 rounds of live ammunition.
  • 586 bales of used clothing.
  • 85 bags of imported flour.
  • 3,766 cartons of frozen poultry products.
  • 2,150 used pneumatic tyres.

The total Duty Payable Value (DPV) of the seizures for the year was placed at N1,267,504,035.

“These achievements are a testament to the dedication of our officers in combating smuggling, protecting the economy, and safeguarding society's well-being,” Shuaibu stated.

He emphasized the command’s continued commitment to the fight against smuggling, noting the importance of public cooperation in providing timely and credible information to aid the NCS in combating economic crimes.
