DELTA STATE POLICE BUST HUMAN TRAFFICKING RING, RESCUE 23 TEENAGE VICTIMS
Acting on credible information received by the Command regarding the activities of a suspect known as Chinyere (surname unknown), who allegedly specializes in trafficking women from the East and bringing them to Ughelli, Delta State, for prostitution, the Delta State Police Command made significant progress on July 15, 2024. The intelligence revealed that Chinyere lures her victims by promising them employment as salesgirls in restaurants.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, known for his zero tolerance towards human and child trafficking, directed the DPO Ekpan, CSP Aliyu Shaba, to act swiftly on the intelligence and locate the hotel where the victims were being held, ensuring the arrest of the suspect.
At around 1900 hours on July 15, 2024, one of the victims (name withheld) was located. She disclosed the illegal activities of the suspect, Chinyere, who remains at large. According to the victim, Chinyere deceived her parents into allowing her to travel to Delta State from Abia State with the promise of a job as a bar salesgirl with a monthly salary of N30,000. However, upon arrival on July 12, 2024, along with two other young girls, they discovered that they were brought to Ughelli for prostitution. Upon refusal, they were thrown out of the hotel.
Based on this information, a combined team of surveillance officers stormed 'Big Dafe Hotel' on Ughelli/Patani Road. They arrested one Chioma Edafe, a 36-year-old woman from Umuogbezea Community in Imo State, who runs the hotel, along with thirty-five others, including twenty-three teenagers. A serious manhunt for the primary suspect, Chinyere, is currently ongoing.
