DSS releases, compensates artisan wrongly detained over Oyo school abduction
The Department of State Services (DSS) has released and compensated a carpenter, Mustapha Marwana, after investigations found no connection between him and the May 15 abduction and killing of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
According to a security source who spoke to Punch, the DSS Director-General, Tosin Ajayi, ordered Marwana’s release after a panel investigating the case found no evidence linking him to the attack or any terrorist organisation.
The source said the DSS conducted a detailed investigation into the Katsina-born artisan’s alleged involvement before clearing him of any association with the Ansaru terrorist group accused of carrying out the attack.
The investigation reportedly established that Marwana had no links to the group’s membership, financing, logistics or operational activities.
Following the outcome of the investigation, the DSS DG reportedly directed his immediate release and approved an initial compensation of N3 million to support him in addressing his immediate needs and rebuilding his livelihood.
Marwana was subsequently released into the custody of his lawyer, Oghene Forgive.
The incident occurred on May 15, when suspected Ansaru terrorists reportedly attacked Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery/Primary School and L.A. Primary School in Oriire, abducting 39 pupils and seven teachers. Two victims were reportedly killed, while the remaining captives were freed on July 10 following a military operation.
Several suspects connected to the attack have since been arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja. Three suspects have reportedly been sentenced to life imprisonment after pleading guilty to terrorism-related charges, while others, including two alleged Ansaru commanders, are currently standing trial.
