EGYPT ARRESTS MOST WANTED MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD LEADER MAHMOUD EZZAT
Police in Egypt has arrested Mahmoud Ezzat, the incumbent leader of the proscribed Islamic group, Muslim Brotherhood.
He was arrested on Friday, August 28 in a residential suburb of Cairo.
"National security has communicated information concerning the arrest of the fugitive leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mahmud Ezzat," the Egyptian interior ministry announced.
Mahmud Ezzat, who had been wanted for about 7 years became the de facto leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in August, 2013 after the arrest of Mohamad Baddie, the sect’s eight leader of brotherhood.
Mahmoud Ezzat had been tried in absentia and has two death sentences including a life imprisonment hanging over his head for his involvement in terrorist attacks and allegations of sharing intelligence with a foreigner.
Sources say Ezzat had taken refuge in Gaza but returned to Egypt to oversee the affairs of the brotherhood.
The Muslim Brotherhood is one of the oldest and largest international Islamic organizations in Egypt.
Egyptian authorities began to crackdown on members of the group after the army’s overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
The Brotherhood was proscribed and named a terrorist organisation.
