Grief in Borno, Nasarawa as Terrorists Kill 50 in Devastating Attacks

No fewer than 50 people have been killed in two separate terrorist attacks targeting Dumba community in Borno State and Tatara village in Nasarawa State.

In Borno, the attack occurred in Dumba, Kukawa Local Government Area, near the fringes of Lake Chad. Farmers and fishermen were the primary victims of the incident.

The state’s Commissioner for Information, Professor Usman Tar, confirmed the death toll on Monday, stating, “Initial reports indicate about 40 farmers have been killed, while efforts are underway to trace those who escaped for reunion with their families.”

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum expressed his sorrow over the incident, condemning the attack in strong terms. “With deep sorrow and anguish, I received the sad news of the attack on Dumba where scores of our farmers and fishermen were killed by terrorists. On behalf of the government, I sympathize with the victims’ families,” he said.

Governor Zulum also urged security agencies to track the perpetrators and bring them to justice. He reminded citizens to adhere to government-demarcated safety zones, noting that these measures were designed to protect communities while military operations continue in unsafe areas.

In Nasarawa State, Tatara village came under a violent attack that claimed 10 lives. Eyewitnesses reported that suspected Fulani militia stormed the village on motorcycles, opening fire indiscriminately.

One eyewitness recounted, “They started shooting sporadically from a shop where three persons were feared killed.”

The attackers reportedly fled the scene before security forces arrived, abandoning their motorcycles. Residents believe the assailants were fleeing ongoing military operations in neighboring states.

Ibrahim Babayo, a resident, revealed, “I received a call around 12 a.m. on Sunday confirming that gunmen, allegedly from the Fulani tribe, stormed the village, shooting indiscriminately and leaving seven persons dead.”

Efforts to ensure the safety of affected communities are ongoing as authorities continue investigations into the attacks.
