THREE DEAD, FOUR INJURED AS SOLDIER ALLEGEDLY OPENS FIRE ON GROUP OF PEOPLE OVER ILLICIT DRUGS IN BORNO COMMUNITY
Reports indicate that a soldier on Saturday, January 16 opened fire on a group of people at Barka Da Zuwa area, along Baga road in Maiduguri, Borno State, killing three people and leaving four others hospitalised.
The incident happened around 8pm in an illegal alcohol joint around the Baga axis of the Maiduguri metropolis. It was gathered that the soldier had a misunderstanding with the seven civilians over illicit drugs in the area which prompted him to open fire on them.
Sources say the friends of the victims in the area lynched the soldier and stabbed him multiple times till he died.
Recall that in 2018, the Borno State Government had marked about 47 hotels, which it termed “illegal alcohol joints,” for demolition within Maiduguri.
The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in the State, Kaka Shehu, said they were a threat to security and peace in the State.
It is imperative to mention that the Baga road axis of Maiduguri, has gained notoriety for harbouring soldiers dismissed by the Army. Sources say the region is also a safe haven for criminals and bandits who perpetually abduct civilians commuting through the route.
