Tinubu Sends High-Level Delegation to London over Ekweremadu’s Case

A high-powered delegation dispatched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with officials at the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Justice to discuss the case of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who has been in British custody since March 2023.

The delegation comprised Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi.

Their visit marks a renewed diplomatic push by the Tinubu administration concerning the detained lawmaker.

After the meeting, the delegation was received at the Nigerian High Commission in London by Ambassador Mohammed Maidugu, the Acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

This latest move underscores the Nigerian government’s increasing engagement with British authorities over high-profile legal matters involving Nigerian citizens.

Senator Ekweremadu, his wife, Beatrice, and a medical doctor were convicted in March 2023 for conspiring to arrange the travel of a young man to the UK for organ harvesting, a violation under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act.

He was later sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison — a ruling that made global headlines as the first of its kind under the Act, reinforcing that political influence offers no immunity from the law.
