Troops Repel Terrorist Attack at Benue Market, Neutralise Two Suspects and Recover Weapons

Troops of Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE, working alongside operatives of the Benue State Civil Protection Guard, have foiled a terrorist attack at Tor Donga Yam Market in Benue State, killing two suspected attackers and recovering weapons and ammunition.

The incident occurred on Sunday, 28 June 2026, while troops were conducting fighting and confidence-building patrols in the area. According to the military, personnel responded swiftly to a distress call reporting the attack and engaged the terrorists upon arrival.

During the gun battle, two suspected terrorists identified as Dantaraba and Golozo were neutralised, preventing what security authorities described as a potentially devastating attack on traders and residents.

A follow-up search of the scene led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 magazine, a damaged pistol, one pistol magazine, six rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, nine rounds of 9mm pistol ammunition, an ATM card, a Moniepoint ATM card, and other items believed to belong to the suspects.

The military said the successful operation ensured that commercial activities at the popular Tor Donga Yam Market continued without disruption, while reassuring residents of sustained security within the area.

The Force Commander of Operation WHIRL STROKE, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their professionalism, courage, and rapid response, noting that their actions prevented possible civilian casualties and safeguarded economic activities at the market.

He also praised the Benue State Civil Protection Guard for its collaboration with the military in ongoing efforts to combat criminality across the state.

Major General Gara further expressed appreciation to members of the public for providing timely and credible intelligence, urging residents to continue supporting security agencies, stressing that maintaining security is a shared responsibility.
