10 SCHOOLCHILDREN DIE, THREE MISSING IN EARLY MORNING FIRE

Ten school children have died, and three have been declared missing after a dormitory engulfed in flames in the early hours of Monday, September 14.

The fire occurred at about 4.30 am in a school dormitory located in Byamungu Islamic Kyerwa, Kagera in Tanzania.

The Kyerwa District Commissioner Rashid Maimu told reporters that there were 74 pupils in the dormitory when the fire began.

Fifty pupils were rescued unharmed, six pupils were rushed to nearby hospitals, and three are missing, reports said.

Mr Maimu told local reporters that DNA tests would need to be carried out to confirm the bodies of the children because they have been burnt beyond recognition.

Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the cause of the fire.
