37 Miners Dead, 25 Hospitalized from Carbon Monoxide Exposure at Plateau Mining Site

A devastating accident at a mining site in Zurak, Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State, has claimed the lives of 37 miners and left 25 others hospitalized due to carbon monoxide exposure. The incident occurred on February 18, 2026, at the Solid Mining Company, where workers were conducting routine operations deep underground.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the victims, primarily young men aged 20 to 35, unknowingly inhaled toxic gas that had accumulated in the poorly ventilated tunnels. Eyewitnesses reported chaos as miners collapsed inside the tunnels, with colleagues desperately trying to rescue survivors.

Rescue teams swiftly responded, cordoning off the area and transporting 25 injured victims to a nearby health center. Several of the injured are in critical condition.

Authorities have secured the site, ensuring no further exposure, and investigations are underway to determine the cause of the gas leak. This tragedy has once again highlighted the severe safety risks in the underground mining industry, particularly the danger of gas exposure in confined spaces.
