BREAKING: OGUN EXTENDS LOCKDOWN BY ANOTHER 7 DAYS

Ogun state government has extended its lockdown by another 7 days following rising cases of Coronavirus in the state.

This was disclosed by the State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Friday, May 8, at his office, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta.

The governor noted that it was inevitable to extend the lockdown as residents violate guidelines for window relaxation, which has led to a spike in daily cases of Coronavirus recorded in the state.

He emphasised that the number of cases in the state used to be single digit for 3 weeks before lockdown, but eventually skyrocketed to 3-digits within days, even with the lockdown and window relaxation.

"In the last week, the number of confirmed cases in our dear Ogun State has risen to more than double"

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control,on Thursday, May 7, 2020, Ogun State has recorded 100 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

He said, 20 of the confirmed cases in the state have been discharged to join their respective families and restart normal life, added that unfortunately the state has recorded a total of 2 deaths.

“This leaves us with 78 active cases who are currently receiving efficient treatment at our treatment centers. As usual, we hope and pray that they will also be discharged in due course.

He reassured residents of the state that there was no reason for panic, saying that the government would continue to work hard to fight against the spread of Coronavirus.

“We have continued to ensure that we increase our pace and widen the coverage of our testing process. As at today, we have screened over 10,000 people and tested over 700.

“In addition to that, we have intensified our contact tracing capacity and have traced over 551 contacts of the COVID-19 positive patients. We are doing this to detect and treat people who are already infected rather than leaving them undetected which will be more detrimental because this will increase community transmission.

“You, the entire people of Ogun State, have not elected me to make easy decisions. And tough decisions, we have to make. Now, to preserve the lives of our people, we are persuaded to extend the current modified lockdown, which has been slightly eased, for another one weeks alongside the current guidelines. This will be reviewed, as usual, on a weekly basis.

“Windows of relaxation will continue to be available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 7.00am to 5.00pm on each day of the window of relaxation,” the governor said.
