BURUNDI DECLARES WHO OFFICIALS IN THE COUNTRY PERSONA NON GRATA
Burundi has declared the WHO team responsible for supporting the country in its response against COVID-19, persona non grata and ordered them to leave by Friday, May 15.
According to AFP, the foreign ministry wrote a letter to the WHO on May 12 stating that the Burundi's Coronavirus coordinator and three others have been declared persona non grata.
The officials are: Dr Walter Kazadi Mulombo; Burundi’s coronavirus coordinator, Dr Jean Pierre Mulunda Nkata; communicable diseases head Dr Ruhana Mirindi Bisimwa; and a laboratory expert in the testing for COVID-19, Professor Daniel Tarzy.
The letter does not provide a reason for the decision, AFP says.
Burundi, a country with about 11 million people have recorded over 4.4 million confirmed cases of the Coronavirus with 2298,843 deaths as of May 14, 2020.
The citizens are scheduled to go to the polls on May 20 to choose a new president, parliamentarians and local officials.
