FORMER MALI PRESIDENT MOUSSA TRAORE IS DEAD

Mali’s former ruler General Moussa Traoré is dead. 


He died on Tuesday, September 15, ten days to his 84th birthday. 


Traoré took power at the age of 32 following a coup that overthrew Mali’s first post-independence president, Modibo Keita. 


General Moussa Traoré ruled the Republic of Mali for 22 years before he was overthrown in March 1991. 


He died as a respected elder statesman with great political influence. The CNSP military junta visited him after they took over power in a coup that led to the resignation of former President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita on August 18.
