Internal security: Police rescue 10 kidnapped victims, recover police arms carted away during ambush, arrest notorious criminal suspects
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has recorded significant breakthroughs in its internal security operations, leading to the rescue of kidnap victims, the recovery of stolen police arms, and the arrest of notorious criminal suspects across the country. These successes underscore the Force's commitment to proactive crime fighting and ensuring the safety of Nigerian citizens.
On April 19, 2025, at about 9:35 p.m., operatives of the Faskari Division of the Katsina State Police Command foiled a kidnap attempt along the Funtua-Gusau highway. Acting on credible information, the officers engaged the bandits in a fierce gun duel, forcing them to flee with gunshot wounds. Ten victims, including two drivers and eight passengers, were rescued unhurt and have since been reunited with their families.
In a separate operation on April 18, 2025, operatives attached to the State Intelligence Department (SID) in Taraba State, in collaboration with local vigilantes, arrested a 40-year-old notorious criminal, Umar Ahmad, at a roadblock in Jalingo. During interrogation, Ahmad led the operatives to Mayo Faran Village in Mayo Belwa Local Government Area, a border town between Taraba and Adamawa states. A search of the area resulted in the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, eight magazines, and thirty-nine rounds of live ammunition. Investigations revealed that one of the recovered rifles had been carted away during a 2023 ambush that led to the death of ASP Aminu Nuhu of the Taraba State Police Command.
Continuing their efforts, on April 17, 2025, at about 1:30 p.m., officers attached to the Fegge Divisional Headquarters in Anambra State intercepted a suspicious shuttle bus parked along Port Harcourt Road, Upper Iweka, Onitsha. A search of the vehicle uncovered five pump-action guns, eight live cartridges, and two handcuffs concealed in a bag of rice. The bus has been subjected to forensic examination, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the culprits.
Also on the same day at about 1:27 p.m., operatives of the Rapid Response Squad and Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Anambra State Command, acting on credible intelligence, arrested 25-year-old Israel Akachukwu at his residence on Ezeigwe Street, Nkpor, Idemili North LGA. A search of his apartment led to the recovery of two pump-action guns, two live cartridges, a cutlass, a yellow axe, and a dagger. The suspect confessed to being a member of the Vikings Confraternity and is assisting police in efforts to arrest other members of the gang.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, commended the officers for their professionalism and swift response, which led to these notable successes. The IGP reiterated the Force's commitment to protecting the lives and property of citizens and emphasized the importance of intelligence-led policing in combating crime nationwide.
The NPF also urged the public to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely and credible information that can aid in maintaining public safety and preventing criminal activities.
