ITALIAN AMBASSADOR TO DR CONGO KILLED IN UN CONVOY

Reports indicate that Italy's Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Luca Attanasio, has been killed in an attack on a United Nations (UN) convoy on Monday.


The DRC Foreign Ministry, confirming the incident in a statement, said Attanasio, 43, died in the hospital after the UN convoy he was travelling in was attacked near Goma, eastern Congo, around 10.15am.




It was learnt that an Italian military police officer, and another person travelling in the convoy were also killed in the attack.


"It is with deep sadness that the foreign ministry confirms the death, today in Goma, of the Italian ambassador.



"No effort will be spared to shed light on what happened," the DRC Foreign Ministry said in a statement.


Attanasio had represented Italy in the DR Congo since 2017. He joined the diplomatic service in 2003 and spent time in Morocco and Nigeria.
