LAGOS GOVERNMENT APPEALS TO YOUTHS TO ENROLL IN MILITARY
The Lagos State Government has urged youths to join the military, emphasizing that national security is a collective responsibility. The Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, made the appeal on Wednesday during a quarterly meeting with the Chairman and members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) in Ikeja.
Mrs. Salu-Hundeyin noted that security is everybody's business and being in the military is a service to the state and the nation. She expressed concern that indigenous youths of the state are not enrolling in the military, citing the last recruitment exercise as an example.
According to her, the Federal Government has mandated that recruitment into the military must be on an equal basis, with each state allocated 150 slots. "We discovered that in the military in Nigeria, Lagos State has been seriously short-changed. We hardly have people there."
She emphasized that the military is about the security of a nation and should not be left to a particular group alone. "It should be everybody's business. Unfortunately, in Lagos State, our children don't like to join the military. They don't see any reason they should be part of the army."
Mrs. Salu-Hundeyin warned that if the state does not participate in the military, it would be short-changing itself. "If your state does not participate, you are short-changing your state," she said.
