"IPOB Bans Independence Day Celebrations Across South-East States"
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has prohibited any Independence Day celebrations in the South-East region of Nigeria on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. In a statement issued on Monday by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB urged people from the South-East, both at home and abroad, to avoid participating in Nigeria’s Independence Day activities worldwide.
Powerful stated, "IPOB calls on Biafrans (Southeasterners) globally to continue with their normal activities, as we do not recognize Nigeria or its British-granted independence of 1960. Although some prominent Igbo figures played significant roles in securing Nigeria's independence, this so-called freedom has cost the Igbo people more blood than any other ethnic group in the country.
"Biafrans have chosen to reject Nigeria's bloody flag of independence and are committed to restoring a truly united and prosperous Independent State of Biafra. Every Biafran should reject this imposed unity as we eagerly anticipate celebrating Biafra’s own independence soon.
"No one in Biafraland should participate in any activities related to Nigeria's Independence Day. There should be no display of the Nigerian flag in Biafra territory, and no independence events for students in Biafraland. People should either go about their daily business or take the day to spend quality time with their families at home."
Powerful further warned, "IPOB is serious about the restoration of Biafra's freedom and sovereignty. Don’t become an enemy of the cause by participating in Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations. Parents and guardians must ensure their children do not attend any such activities. We are closely monitoring everything in Biafraland. As Igbo parents, don’t allow your children to be sacrificed for a country that devalues them."
