MARITIME WORKERS UNION OF NIGERIA THREATEN TO WITHDRAW OPERATIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY IF ARRESTED DOCK WORKERS IN PORT HARCOURT ARE NOT RELEASED
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria has threatened to withdraw operations across the country if Governor Wike does not release its arrested members.
The MWUN issued this warning in a statement signed by its President, Comr. (Prince) Adewale Adeyanju Abdulwaheed.
The union alleged that at least 20 of their members were arrested by the Rivers State Government led by Governor Wike on their way from an essential service operation at the BUA/PTOL terminal, Port Harcourt on May 9.
"All entreaties/explanation made by the Workers fell on deaf ears in spite of presenting essential duty port permit duly signed by the Nigeria Port's Authority NPA. Instead, the Governor mocked then saying they should go and work in Abuja," the MWUN said.
Comr. Abdulwaheed appealed to the government to release the workers to douse rising tensions in the port "which could snowball into full-blown industrial unrest if not quickly apprehended now."
The union gave the government forty-eight hours to release their members else they would be forced to withdraw their services across the nation.
The forty-eight hours expired yesterday.
