NCCSALW, Nigerian Army Strengthen Collaboration Against Arms Proliferation in North-East

The North-East Zonal Office of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) has pledged closer collaboration with the Nigerian Army’s 7 Division in tackling the proliferation of illicit arms and light weapons in the region.

The Zonal Director, Maj. Gen. Abubakar Adamu (rtd), made this known during a courtesy visit to the Acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division/Commander Sector 1 Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, Brig. Gen. Ugochukwu Unachukwu, at the Division Headquarters, Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, on August 26, 2025.

Gen. Adamu emphasized that synergy between both institutions would bolster ongoing counterinsurgency operations and strengthen efforts to curb the flow of illegal arms in the North-East and across the Sahel. He noted that the NCCSALW, which operates under the Office of the National Security Adviser, was recently empowered to destroy obsolete arms and prosecute gunrunners and traffickers.

“Effective collaboration and synergy will go a long way in addressing the security dynamics of counter-insurgency operations in the region,” he stated, while stressing the need for heightened awareness of NCCSALW’s mandate among troops and stakeholders.

He commended the 7 Division for its role in stabilizing the region, adding that NCCSALW would continue to engage with security agencies and communities under its multi-agency framework.

In his response, Brig. Gen. Unachukwu congratulated Maj. Gen. Adamu on his appointment and reaffirmed the Division’s readiness to support the Centre in its mandate. He described arms proliferation as a critical driver of insecurity in the North-East, noting that insurgency, terrorism, and armed violence demanded innovative, collaborative solutions.

The visit featured strategic discussions on inter-agency cooperation, signing of the visitor’s book, exchange of souvenirs, and a group photograph to seal the partnership.
