Nigerian Navy Rescues 8 Police Officers and 1 Civilian in Bayelsa State
Personnel from the Nigerian Navy successfully carried out a search and rescue operation in Agbura, Bayelsa State, rescuing nine individuals, including eight police officers and one civilian. The victims were traveling to Yenagoa when their speedboat struck a submerged wreck and capsized.
On December 24, 2024, the Navy team responded promptly to the distress call, retrieving the passengers and recovering three rifles belonging to the officers. First aid was administered to the injured, and they were later transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa for further treatment.
The submerged wreck that caused the capsizing was located and marked to prevent future accidents. The recovered weapons were documented and securely stored, awaiting handover to the Nigerian Police Force, Bayelsa State Command.
This successful operation underscores the effective collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and other security agencies. The Navy remains committed to ensuring the safety of the nation’s waterways and strengthening cooperation with security partners to enhance national security.
Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, Chief of the Naval Staff, reiterated the Navy’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property within Nigeria’s maritime domain. He also commended the swift response and professionalism of the personnel involved in the operation.
