Senegalese Defence Minister Commends ECOWAS Mission in Guinea-Bissau

The Senegalese Minister of Defence, General Birame Diop (rtd), has praised the performance of the Economic Community of West African States Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB) during a courtesy visit to the mission’s Force Headquarters in Bissau City on Thursday, 19 September 2025.

General Diop, who was accompanied by the Guinean Defence Minister, Mr. Dionysio Cabi, and the Senegalese Ambassador to Guinea-Bissau, Ambassador Musa, was received by the Force Commander, Brigadier General Edward Odinya Ojabo, along with senior staff officers and contingent commanders.

Following a detailed briefing on the mission’s operations, achievements, and challenges, General Diop commended the Force Commander for what he described as a comprehensive and enlightening presentation. He lauded the mission’s accomplishments and congratulated the troops for their professionalism and dedication to peacekeeping efforts in the country.

The Senegalese Minister urged the Force to continue fostering teamwork, unity, and mutual respect, while embracing diversity as a source of strength. He emphasized the need for discipline and tolerance at all levels and reminded the troops to maintain strong cooperation with the host nation’s authorities and local security agencies.

General Diop further highlighted the importance of preserving the image of ECOWAS and its member states, stressing that the hardships endured by the people of Guinea-Bissau in the past should guide the mission’s actions. He urged the troops to remain supportive of the local population and avoid measures that could exacerbate their suffering.

The visit reaffirmed Senegal’s commitment to regional stability and support for ECOWAS peacekeeping operations across West Africa.
