- Stampede Tragedies: APC Criticizes PDP's "Insensitive" Politics
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of exploiting recent stampede incidents at palliative distribution centres for political gain. The tragedies, which occurred in Oyo, Anambra, and the Federal Capital Territory, claimed multiple lives.
In a statement released on Monday, APC spokesperson Felix Morka condemned the PDP for what he described as "callous political chicanery" during a time of national mourning. Morka accused the PDP of lacking genuine compassion for the victims and their families.
"Rather than commiserating with the victims and their families, the PDP has chosen to manipulate this tragedy for political purposes," Morka said.
He drew attention to the 2014 stampede during a Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment exercise under the PDP-led administration, where several job seekers lost their lives. He argued that the PDP’s record of mismanagement undermines its criticisms of the APC-led government.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. These tragedies have united well-meaning Nigerians in grief and reflection on how improved planning could have prevented such incidents," Morka said.
"It is deeply inappropriate and unacceptable for the PDP to exploit these events to attack an administration committed to repairing the damage caused by nearly two decades of PDP governance," he added.
The PDP, however, has continued to hold the APC accountable, attributing the stampedes to systemic failures under the current administration.
