Suspected ISWAP fighter surrenders to troops in Borno, admits involvement in three Delwa attacks
Troops of the 73 Battalion (Motorised), Operation HADIN KAI, have taken into custody a suspected member of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) after he voluntarily surrendered in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State.
According to Zagazola Makama the suspect was apprehended at about 6:47 p.m. on July 14 in the Cashew Plantation area during routine security operations.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect reportedly identified himself as an ISWAP member from Warabe, Pulka, in Gwoza Local Government Area, stating that he had willingly approached the troops to surrender.
He also disclosed that he had disposed of his AK-47 rifle by throwing it into a river before making contact with the military.
The suspect further confessed to participating in three separate terrorist attacks on Delwa alongside other ISWAP fighters.
Items recovered from him included a bicycle, a cutlass, a bicycle repair solution, a bicycle pump, a spoon, and N6,500 in cash.
Military sources said the suspect remains in custody and is undergoing further investigation to gather intelligence that could aid ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
The development is part of Operation HADIN KAI's sustained campaign to encourage the surrender of insurgents while intensifying efforts to dismantle terrorist networks operating across Nigeria's North-East.
