Tinubu, NLC in Last-Minute Talks Over Looming Nationwide Protest
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday night met behind closed doors with leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, as the Federal Government moves to engage organised labour ahead of its planned nationwide protest over worsening insecurity.
The meeting was attended by several senior government officials, including the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma; Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo; Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris; and the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha.
The labour delegation was led by the President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero.
The late-night talks came barely 24 hours before the NLC’s proposed nationwide protest scheduled for December 17. Although no formal statement was issued after the meeting, sources familiar with the discussions said efforts were made to ease tensions, address labour’s security concerns, and explore possible ways to forestall the planned mass action.
Earlier, the NLC had insisted that the protest would go ahead as planned, stressing that growing insecurity and unresolved national issues required urgent attention from the authorities.
