Troops Bust Car Snatching Syndicate, Neutralise Armed Robbers, Recover Weapons in Plateau State
Troops of 3 Division and Operation SAFE HAVEN have dismantled a car snatching syndicate and neutralised two suspected armed robbers during a security operation in Jos, Plateau State.
The operation, which took place on 28 April 2025, followed intelligence-led patrols around the Federal Low-Cost Estate in Jos South Local Government Area. While on patrol, the troops intercepted an ash-coloured Opel Vectra with two occupants at the Lalong Gate of the estate. Upon sighting the patrol team, the driver attempted to make a sudden detour to escape but was immediately halted.
As the troops questioned the suspects, the driver made a failed attempt to overrun the patrol motorcycle and flee. Troops responded swiftly and neutralised the driver.
Preliminary interrogation of the surviving suspect revealed that they were armed robbers specialising in car theft. The suspect, who claimed to have returned to Jos from Katsina State on 27 April for car-snatching operations, confessed to their criminal activities. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of an identity card belonging to a security agency—believed to be used to evade checkpoints—and multiple car master keys used to unlock victims’ vehicles.
Following the initial arrest, troops carried out a follow-up operation at the suspects’ hideout located at Corner Shagari, Angwan Rogo, in Jos North LGA. During the search, a fabricated pistol was recovered from the ceiling of the building.
The arrested suspect volunteered to lead the troops to the residence of another accomplice within the same vicinity. However, in a desperate attempt to escape, the suspect tried to disarm one of the soldiers. Troops swiftly responded, neutralising the suspect in the process.
Security operatives are continuing investigations and search operations to identify and apprehend other members of the criminal syndicate.
The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to eradicating criminal elements and ensuring the safety of lives and property in Plateau State and other parts of the country.
