US Embassy in Nigeria Issues New Directive for Immigrant Visa Applicants

Applicants with scheduled interviews will now be required to visit the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos twice as part of the immigrant visa application process, starting January 1, 2025.

The U.S. Embassy announced this update on its official X (formerly Twitter) page, stating:

“For applicants with interviews scheduled after January 1, 2025, at least two visits to the Consulate General in Lagos will be necessary during the immigrant visa process. This new procedure is designed to help applicants prepare for their visa interviews and minimize significant processing delays.”

According to details provided on the embassy’s website, the first visit involves an In-Person Document Review with a consular staff member.

“This review ensures applicants are adequately prepared for their visa interviews. It provides an opportunity to retrieve any missing documents ahead of time, helping to avoid delays in the application process,” the embassy explained.

The second visit will be the visa interview itself, conducted by a Consular Officer. This appointment will be scheduled by the National Visa Center (NVC).

The embassy cautioned, “If you do not complete the In-Person Document Review before your visa interview, you will be required to reschedule your appointment.”

These changes aim to improve efficiency and reduce delays caused by incomplete documentation.

In a related development, the embassy transitioned to a new visa services provider for its Abuja and Lagos consulates on August 26, 2024, as part of ongoing efforts to streamline services.
