STATE LEGISLATIVE WORKERS DOWN TOOLS OVER FAILURE TO IMPLEMENT FINANCIAL AUTONOMY

The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) on Tuesday downed tools across the country over the non-implementation of financial autonomy for state legislatures.

Usman Mohammed, PASAN national president told newsmen that the strike became necessary following the unwillingness of the federal government to implement the financial autonomy act of 2018, adding that the Union has exhausted all other options before embarking on the industrial action.

“The union having exhausted all attempts aimed at asking for the implementation of the financial autonomy by the federal government after 21 days, 14 days and seven days ultimatums; at this juncture, the union has no other option than to direct our members to embark on an indefinite strike,” he said.

The industrial action has grounded activities at various legislative complexes as members of staff could be seen standing outside of their offices.

President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2020 signed an executive order granting financial autonomy to the legislature and judiciary across the 36 states of the federation.

However, the president suspended the implementation of the order the following month after a meeting with the governors.
