WIKE ACCUSES POLICE OF ABETTING VIOLATION OF LOCKDOWN BY COLLECTING BRIBES IN RIVERS

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has accused the State's Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Adamu Abubakar of supporting the violation of lockdown imposed on the State by collecting bribe.

Wike, during an interview on Thursday, accused the State's Deputy Commissioner of Police of issuing illegal letters to companies and releasing people he had arrested after collecting money from their companies.

The Governor said any approval issued by the police or any other authorities outside the office of the Rivers State Governor is illegal.

Rivers State Government, on April 18, announced a total lockdown of some parts of Port Harcourt Metropolis for lack of compliance of government order on closure of markets and public gatherings, which took effect from 6 am April 19 2020.

"It is unfortunate to see the level of sabotage that we get from the police, particularly, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Rivers State Police Command," the Governor said.

"The Deputy Commissioner of Police will sign approvals for companies because he wants to collect money. I am the Governor of this State, and there cannot be two governors.

"The Deputy Commissioner of Police has no powers to issue approvals when the State Government has locked down the State. After the State Security Council met and agreed on the lockdown, the Deputy Commissioner of Police went ahead to issue illegal letters to companies to operate. I have never seen that in my life."

Governor Wike further stated that the state security council would hold an emergency meeting to curb this criminal act looming in the State.

He commended the patience of the residents and assured them that the lockdown would be lifted as soon as the objective is achieved.
