ZAMFARA SPECIAL CONSTABLES PERMITTED TO WEAR UNIFORMS WITHOUT BEARING FIREARMS - COMMISSIONER OF POLICE
Abutu Yaro, the Zamfara State Commissioner of Police has debunked reports making the rounds on social media that the force command has banned member of Special Constabulary from wearing a uniform and performing other duties carried out by police.
Eons intelligence gathered that some online publications had earlier circulated reports stating that the Commissioner had directed the Special Constabulary Personnel to desist from wearing a uniform, saying that they are not police officers but police informants, whose duty is to only gather intelligence.

According to a statement issued on 22nd January 2021 by SP Mohammed Shehu, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Zamfara, the CP said the false story was capable of demoralising the morale of young and vibrant members of Special Constabulary from working towards the restoration of lasting peace in the state.
Clarifying his directive, the police boss said the operatives are only banned from bearing firearms and wearing a regular police uniform as well as performing duties outside their communities.

Zamfara State has suffered series of security threats involving banditry attacks - killings and kidnappings- a development that made the State Police Command recruited 3,850 indigenes of the State to be trained as Special constables to tackle security challenges.
Following their training and approval by President Muhammadu Buhari and IGP Muhammed Abubakar, Inspector General of Police in November 2020, at least 1,347 passed out at police training School in Sokoto and were deployed to different parts of the State for community policing.
