The operation, conducted by the Intelligence Response Team on November 18, recovered 17 firearms, ammunition, and equipment used for fabricating rifles.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, detailed the recovery in a statement released on Friday. The items seized included:
- 10 locally fabricated AK-47 rifles
- 5 Israeli AK-47 rifles
- 1 revolver pistol
- 1 pump-action rifle
- 20 rounds of AK-47 ammunition
- A welding machine used for rifle fabrication
The arrested suspects, identified as Adamu Noma, Matthew Audu, Andrew Poyi, Aminu Sani, and Aminu Talha, are believed to be key members of the syndicate.
ACP Adejobi emphasized that the operation underscores the police's commitment to eradicating criminal activities and enhancing national security.
“These accomplishments demonstrate the steadfastness of the current police leadership in decimating criminal networks and tackling insecurity across the country,” Adejobi stated.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, praised the operatives for their success and reiterated his directive to intensify efforts against the proliferation of illegal arms.
“The IGP has charged tactical units to ensure the complete mopping up of illegal arms and the dismantling of local manufacturers of illicit weapons through all necessary means,” Adejobi added.
The operation represents a significant step in Nigeria's ongoing battle against arms trafficking and organized crime.
