BREAKING: FG ANNOUNCES DATE FOR COMMENCEMENT OF WAEC
The Federal Government has said that the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will begin on August 17, 2020.
The Government also said that exit classes in secondary schools should resume August 4.
Ben Bem Goong, Director Press and Public Relations of the Federal Ministry of Education, made this known in a statement released on Monday, July 27.
Goong said SS3 students will have two weeks within which to prepare for the West African Examinations (WAEC) examination.
According to him, the development was as a result of the ‘unanimous’ decision reached at a virtual consultative meeting between the Federal Ministry of Education and Commissioners of education of the 36 States.
He added that the decision did not leave out the National Union of Teachers (NUT), proprietor of privates schools, and Chief Executives of examination bodies.
“It was agreed that the exit classes should resume immediately after Sallah break, from August 4, 2020, to enable them to prepare for the WAEC examination scheduled to commence from August 17,” the statement read.
Eons Intelligence had earlier reported that the Federal Government said final year students in Nigeria secondary schools will not participate in this year's WAEC earlier scheduled for August 5 to September 5 due to Coronavirus concerns.
However, the House of Representatives opposed the decision of the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, on the cancellation of 2020 WASSCE. The lawmakers said that the decision of Minister is going to affect the future of the students.
In the statement, the Ministry urged the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVD-19 to assist in putting in place safety measures needed as the reopening gathers momentum.
“The meeting also resolved that a passionate appeal be made to the Federal Government through the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVD-19 and spirited Nigerians for assistance to schools across the country to enable them fast track the preparation for safe reopening as agreed.”
