FULANI HERDSMEN EVICTION: RESIDENTS OF AKURE PROTEST IN SUPPORT OF GOVERNOR AKEREDOLU'S ORDER

Residents of Akure, Ondo State on Thursday took to the streets to show support for Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu's order that herdsmen should vacate forest reserves in the State within seven days.

Recall Eons Intelligence earlier reported that Governor Akeredolu who blamed rogue herdsmen for criminal activities in the State had earlier issued a 7-day ultimatum to them to leave Ondo forest reserves effective Monday, January 18.

He, however, noted that his administration would give a grace period of seven days to herdsmen who wish to carry on with their cattle-rearing business in the state to register with appropriate authorities.

During the protest on 21st January 2021, the protesters including commercial drivers, members of the Nigeria Forest Services known as forest guards, farmers and traders urged the Governor not to back down on his directive.

Speaking with newsmen at the protest ground, Comrade Jacob Adejo, Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, said commercial drivers were no longer safe in the State.

Adejo decried criminal activities, including kidnapping perpetrated on his members by the herders.

On Tuesday the Presidency and Governor Akeredolu headed for a showdown over the ultimatum given to Fulani herders to vacate the forest reserves in the state.

While the Presidency said the governor had no constitutional powers to ask anybody to leave the state or any part of the state, the governor insisted that his seven days ultimatum stays.
