BREAKING: EVARISTE NDAYISHIMIYE WINS BURUNDI PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

Burundi’s electoral commission has announced Evariste Ndayishimiye as the winner of last Wednesday’s presidential election.

On May 20, Burundians went to the polls to elect their president, lawmakers and local officials amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Evariste Ndayishimiye, a retired army general, won 68.72 per cent of the votes, while the main opposition leader, Agathon Rwasa received 24.19 per cent, the electoral body said on Monday.

The outgoing President Pierre Nkurunziza chose Ndayishimiye as his successor after his controversial decision to seek a third term in the 2015 election sparked mass unrest and an opposition boycott.

Rwasa, the opposition candidate has cried foul and may appeal to the Constitutional Court.

The Constitutional Court will declare the final election results on June 4.
