PRESIDENT OF PERU, MANUEL MERINO RESIGNS FOLLOWING MASSIVE PROTESTS AGAINST HIM IN THE COUNTRY
Peru’s President, Manuel Merino, on Sunday, November 15, resigned following street protests against him.
His resignation comes a day after police disrupted and clamped down on protesters leaving at least two people dead
Thousands of Peruvians have taken to the streets in days of protests against Merino following the ousting of his predecessor Martin Vizcarra, who was impeached on corruption allegations on Monday.
Merino, 59, resigned shortly after a crisis session of Congress called on him to quit power before 6:00 pm.
“I want to let the whole country know that I’m resigning,” Merino said in a nationwide address.
His resignation was accompanied with noisy celebrations in Lima, the country's capital, with demonstrators taking to the streets sounding horns and banging pots.
The Congress is expected to appoint a new president
