Delta Police Bust Kidnap, Gun-Running Syndicates, Recover AK-47 Rifles and Ammunition in Multi-State Operations

The Delta State Police Command has recorded major successes in its ongoing crackdown on kidnapping and illegal arms trafficking, with the arrest of several suspects and recovery of weapons during intelligence-led operations within and beyond the state.

In one operation carried out on April 24, 2026, at about 6:30 p.m., operatives of the Command’s tactical team based in Ughelli arrested a 22-year-old suspect, Ahmadu Usman, at the Ekuigbo area of Ughelli. He was reportedly linked to a kidnapping syndicate terrorising commuters along the Ughelli–Warri Road.

Further interrogation led to the arrest of another suspect, Haruna Abdullahi, 37, at a trailer park along the Warri–Sapele Road. Police recovered one AK-47 rifle loaded with 36 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition from the suspects. Authorities confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody, with investigations ongoing.

In a separate operation on April 23, 2026, the same tactical team arrested a suspect in Ughelli over involvement in an inter-state gun-running and kidnapping network. The suspect was apprehended alongside Haruna Jibrin, 30, who was allegedly tasked with transporting arms from Ughelli to Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Follow-up operations on April 24 led to the arrest of another accomplice, Isiyaku Adamu, 38, in Rivers State. Police also recovered an AK-47 rifle intended for transportation, along with a blue Toyota Corolla vehicle (registration number MUS 138 DJ) used in the operation.

The Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the Command’s zero tolerance for kidnapping and illegal arms trafficking, assuring residents of sustained operations to enhance public safety and dismantle criminal networks.
