Gunmen Kill Four, Burn Homes and Church in Niger State Community

At least four people were killed on Friday evening after armed attackers invaded Damala village in the Wawa area of Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State.

Local sources said the assailants stormed the community between 8:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., launching a violent raid that left residents fleeing for safety. During the attack, the gunmen reportedly killed four villagers and carted away livestock, driving the animals into nearby forests.

The attackers were also said to have set fire to a church and several houses, causing extensive damage to property and forcing many families to abandon their homes.

The incident has heightened fear among residents of Damala and surrounding communities, who remain exposed to repeated attacks. Witnesses said the assault was sudden and that there were no security personnel present in the area at the time.

As of the time of reporting, security agencies had yet to issue an official response. Residents have renewed calls on the state and federal governments to urgently strengthen security presence in Borgu and neighbouring areas to safeguard lives, property, and places of worship.

The attack underscores the growing insecurity facing rural communities in Niger State, particularly those near forests and mining zones that have increasingly become targets of violent criminal activity.
