Nigeria Secures $52.88 Million Repatriated from US, Allocates Funds to Boost Rural Electrification and Justice System
The Nigerian government has successfully recovered $52.88 million linked to former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke through collaboration with the United States.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, revealed the development during a formal signing ceremony of the asset recovery agreement between Nigeria and the U.S. in Abuja on Friday.
Fagbemi announced that $50 million of the recovered funds will be allocated to rural electrification projects, executed through the World Bank, while the remaining $2 million will be directed toward strengthening Nigeria’s justice system and combating corruption through the International Institute of Justice.
“This asset return represents a landmark in the ongoing partnership between Nigeria and the United States to combat corruption and uphold the rule of law,” Fagbemi said, emphasizing its alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s anti-corruption agenda.
United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, also addressed the event, urging transparency and accountability in deploying the recovered funds for the benefit of Nigerian citizens.
