EPL RECORDS 2 MORE COVID-19 CASES

The English Premier League (EPL) has recorded 2 more COVID-19 cases after a second phase of testing, the Premier League said yesterday.

8 positive tests have been recorded from England's top flight clubs since the players commenced limited training last Tuesday.

“The Premier League can today (Saturday) confirm that on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 996 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19. Of these, two have tested positive from two clubs,” the league said in a statement.

“The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency.

“Players or club staff who have tested positive will now self-isolate for a period of seven days.”

However, the EPL said it would not provide details of the identities of the newly infected cases.

A total of 748 tests has been conducted on players and club staff in the last one week.

Watford Star, Adrian Mariappa, and two members of the club's non playing staff have been confirmed positive of carrying the virus.

Recall that Burnley assistant manager, Ian Woan tested positive to the virus last week.

They are all in their 7-day isolation period.

It is pertinent to note that two players in Watford who came in contact with the infected persons are now on self-isolation.

The Premier League had been suspended since March due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Another round of tests are scheduled to take place on Monday and Tuesday as the 20 top flight clubs sets to hold a meeting on Wednesday to decide whether they can move to phase two of the full contact training.

Recall that the German Bundesliga returned to action last week with matched played in empty stadiums.

Spain's Prime Minister also gave the go-ahead for La Liga to resume from June 8th.
