Lagos State to Demolish Structures Under Power Lines for Public Safety

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to remove all structures built under power lines and high-tension cables across the state to ensure public safety.

In a statement on Monday, the Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Adu Ademuyiwa, emphasized that the initiative aims to safeguard lives and property from potential electrical hazards.

Seven-Day Ultimatum for Property Owners

The LASBCA has issued a seven-day ultimatum for property owners to remove any structures within restricted power line corridors. The agency warned that failure to comply would lead to demolition.

“As part of proactive measures to protect lives and property, the Lagos State Government, through LASBCA, has directed the removal of all illegal structures erected under high-tension and power lines. Property owners have until January 31, 2025, to comply, after which enforcement actions will commence,” the statement read.

Legal Basis & Enforcement Actions

The agency’s General Manager, Gbolahan Oki, reaffirmed that the directive aligns with the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law, which prohibits construction within restricted zones, including power line corridors.

Oki warned that non-compliance would lead to strict enforcement measures, including demolition and possible legal sanctions.

“Removing illegal structures is a crucial step in preventing tragedies caused by electrical hazards,” he stated.

Risks of Building Under High-Tension Power Lines

Oki outlined the serious risks posed by structures within power line clearance zones, including:

  • Electrocution
  • Power surges
  • Fires
  • Infrastructural damage due to safety violations

Beyond safety concerns, he stressed that unauthorised constructions negatively impact urban planning and environmental sustainability.

“Enforcing this directive is part of a broader vision to create a safer and more resilient Lagos,” Oki added.

Call for Compliance

The state government has urged property owners, developers, and residents to comply with building regulations by voluntarily removing illegal structures that violate safety standards.

LASBCA has a history of taking action against illegal constructions. In 2023, the agency demolished a five-story building at 7 Breadfruit Street, Lagos Island, as part of its efforts to curb illegal construction and prevent building collapses.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing safety laws, ensuring that Lagos remains a secure and well-planned urban environment.
