INVESTIGATE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST ME AND PROSECUTE MY ACCUSER IF FOUND INNOCENT- VICE PRESIDENT YEMI OSINBAJO TELLS IG OF POLICE

Nigeria's Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Thursday, July 9 petitioned the Inspector of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to investigate the allegations levelled against him claiming that he received 4 billion naira from the embattled Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibrahim Magu.

In the letter, Osibanjo further stated that if the investigations carried out confirms that he is innocent, the IG of Police should initiate criminal proceedings against the purveyor of the false news.

On July 8, an online platform, PointBlank news owned by a Jackson Ude, a former Director of Strategy and Communications alleged that Magu gave Vice President Osinbajo 4 billion naira from a N39 billion allegedly embezzled from recovered loots.

In a statement released through his media aide on Wednesday, July 8, the Vice President said the reports are false and baseless.

The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Yemi Osinbajo, Laolu Akande said Prof Osinbajo would not be affected by the "obvious campaigns of lies and calumny" hinting that the vice president would be pursuing a legal redress against the source of the publication.

In the letter addressed to the IGP in which the Attorney General of the Federation is also copied, the Vice President through his lawyers said these "vicious and malicious publications" are intended to portray Osinbajo as a "dishonest and disloyal public officer and consequently unfit for the position of Vice President of the Republic of Nigeria which he is occupying."

The letter further stated that unless criminal defamation is brought against the perpetrator, he would continue to use his social media platforms to publish materials that are criminally defamatory against the Vice President.

This is not the first time the Prof Osinbajo would tackle instances of false and defamatory allegations against him on social media. He had earlier stated that he was willing to wave his immunity to ensure purveyors of such news be brought to book.

Eons Intelligence reported that Magu, who is still in police custody, was temporarily relieved from his position as the Acting Chairman of the EFCC after his arrest on Monday, July 6. pending the outcome of the presidential panel investigating corruption allegations levelled against him. He has so far spent four days in police custody.
