Tragedy Strikes Ondo Church: Prophetess Arrested Following Mother and Child's Death
The Ondo State Police Command announced on Tuesday the arrest of a prophetess, Mrs. Folashade Adekola, following the deaths of a woman, Jumoke Adesuwa, and her newborn baby in the prophetess's church.
Reports indicate that Adesuwa died from complications caused by heavy bleeding after childbirth at the church, located in the Oke-Aro area of Akure, the state capital. Her newborn was reported to have died immediately after birth.
The prophetess was taken into custody after the deceased’s brother reported the incident to the police. Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the prophetess’s arrest and said she was currently held at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation.
A family source, speaking to PUNCH Metro under the condition of anonymity, explained that the family first heard about the delivery from someone at the church, who called the deceased’s husband to inform him of the birth. The husband, along with another family member, immediately rushed to the church.
“When they arrived,” the source shared, “they were told that the baby had died but that the mother was still alive. However, when they saw her, she was in a pool of blood, bleeding heavily. They rushed her to the nearest hospital.”
Sadly, due to the severity of her condition, Adesuwa was turned away from three hospitals before she was admitted at the fourth, where she died during attempts to stabilize her. Returning to the church to collect the newborn’s body, the family was disturbed by the state of the room where the corpse was kept, noting that it was unsuitable for deliveries.
The case was subsequently reported at the Oke-Aro Police Station in Akure, which led to the prophetess's arrest. Adesuwa’s body has been taken to the mortuary.
