Operation Lafiyan Jamaa: Troops of 6 Brigade Nab Wanted Bandits, Impostor, Recover Arms in Taraba State.
Troops of the 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army/Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have recorded significant operational gains under Operation Lafiyan Jamaa, with recent successes across Taraba State, including the arrest of a wanted bandit, the capture of a fake military officer, and the recovery of arms and ammunition.
On April 16, 2025, following a distress call from a local hunter, troops raided a suspected bandits’ camp at Dutsen Kachalla in Lainde, Lau Local Government Area (LGA). Although the criminals fled into the mountains on sighting the soldiers, the troops recovered one AK-47 magazine, an AK-47 rifle butt, a military headgear, and a National Identification Card belonging to one Adamu Umaru Jauro.
Three days later, on April 19, troops apprehended Yusuf Hammadu, alias "Dogo", at Lainde Jessy in Lau LGA, based on credible intelligence. Hammadu, who has long been on the watchlist of security agencies, confessed during interrogation to being a member of a kidnapping syndicate operating in Jalingo, Ardo-Kola, Lau, and Yorro LGAs.
In a separate operation on April 22, troops arrested Richard Ongu, who had been posing as a Major in the Nigerian Army. Ongu falsely claimed he was posted to 20 Model Battalion in Gashaka. Preliminary investigations revealed he was a dismissed Flight Sergeant from the Nigerian Air Force, discharged in November 2019.
Ongu allegedly defrauded numerous individuals by impersonating a military officer. He was reported to have swapped his Nissan Jeep for a Toyota Corolla worth N5.2 million at a car dealership, promising to pay the balance but failing to do so. He also collected N1.6 million as a deposit for 350 bags of beniseed and extorted funds from locals in Bali and Gassol LGAs under the pretense of military recruitment. Claiming to be the Officer Commanding the Forward Operating Base in Bali, he also attempted to illegally procure firearms for community leaders. He is to be handed over to appropriate authorities after military investigations for prosecution.
In another successful mission on April 24, 6 Brigade troops, working alongside operatives from the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), raided Jatau-Nyimu village in Donga LGA. The operation led to the recovery of 86 rounds of 5.6mm ammunition, one Tarvor magazine, four cartridges, one Baofeng handheld radio, three single-barrel guns, and two military camouflage uniforms.
Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, Commander of the 6 Brigade, commended the troops for their professionalism and bravery. He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to restoring peace and security across Taraba State and urged residents to provide timely and accurate information to support ongoing operations.
General Uwa also warned the public against fraudulent recruitment schemes, stressing that enlistment into the Nigerian Army is free, voluntary, and strictly based on merit.
