FRSC TO BEAR FIREARMS - REPS

The House of Representatives Committee on Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), on Thursday, November 5, said that operatives of the corps will begin to bear firearms to curtail the excesses of road users in Nigeria.

The Chairman of the committee, Akinfolarin Mayowa, made this known during the corps’ budget defence in Abuja.

Mayowa explained that the 1992 Act of FRSC allowed the corps to bear arms, however said it has not been implemented.

The Chairman said the implementation had become necessary to ensure strict compliance with laws binding road usage and to enable the FRSC discharge its duty effectively.

According to him, eradicating accidents on the nation’s highways should be the collective responsibility of all Nigerians, adding that no stone should be left unturned to achieve this.

He added that the committee would meet with Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and also write to President Muhammadu Buhari to implement the Act.

Corroborating the move, Lawmaker Soloman Maren said there are more risks on the roads, adding that the FRSC should now bear arms.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, lamented incidents where motorists threatened personnel on duty.

Oyeyemi reiterated that weapon bearing would help protect operatives against violence from road users.
