Lagos State Enacts Organ Transplantation and Consumer Protection Laws to Enhance Public Welfare and Safety

The Lagos State government has enacted the Human Organ and Tissue Transplantation Law alongside four other significant laws aimed at improving public welfare, safety, and justice. Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, announced this during a briefing at the Ministry of Justice in Alausa, Ikeja. He emphasized the organ transplant law's role in combating illegal organ harvesting in the state.

Pedro highlighted that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's signing of these laws underscores the administration's commitment to the welfare, security, and prosperity of Lagos residents. The newly signed laws include the Consumer Protection Law, Lagos Enforcement Training Institute Law, Victims Assistance and Witness Protection Law, and Fire and Rescue Service Law.

“These laws are not just legislative achievements; they reflect our dedication to ensuring Lagos remains a model of progress, justice, and opportunity in Nigeria,” Pedro said, as quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). He noted that the laws address critical issues like public welfare, human rights, safety, and environmental sustainability, fostering a secure and prosperous future for Lagos residents.

The Human Organ and Tissue Transplantation Law establishes a framework to regulate organ transplants, prohibit unauthorized organ harvesting, and ban advertisements for organ sales. Pedro explained that the law aims to protect individuals from exploitation and uphold ethical medical standards. Violators could face up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to N10 million.

The Lagos Consumer Protection Law enhances consumer rights, empowering residents to hold businesses accountable. It includes strict penalties for violators, such as fines of up to N5 million, sealing of premises selling hazardous products, and imprisonment of up to six months. Repeat offenders face even harsher penalties, including longer prison sentences and additional fines.

Pedro urged residents to familiarize themselves with these new laws and actively participate in their enforcement to ensure a safer and more just Lagos for all.
