RWANDA GENOCIDE HERO PAUL RUSESABAGINA ARRESTED ON TERROR RELATED CHARGES

Paul Rusesabagina, the man who saved more than a thousand Hutus and Tutsis during the 1994 Rwanda genocide, has been arrested on terror-related offences.

The Rwanda Investigation Bureau announced on Monday that Paul Rusesabagina was apprehended for his alleged involvement in terrorism, arson, kidnap, murder and other criminal activities, adding that his arrest was facilitated through international cooperation.

“Rusesabagina is suspected to be the founder, leader, sponsor and member of violent, armed, extremist terror outfits including MRCD and PDR-Ihumure, operating out of various places in the region and abroad,” the RIB statement read.

“He has been subject of an International Arrest Warrant, wanted to answer charges of serious crime including terrorism, arson, kidnap and murder, perpetrated against unarmed, innocent Rwandan civilians on Rwandan territory including in Nyabimata - Nyaruguru district in June 2018 and in Nyungwe - Nyamagabe district in December 2018,” it said.

As the then owner of the Hôtel des Mille Collines, Paul Rusesabagina heroic act of saving Rwandans was immortalised by Hollywood in the movie Hotel Rwanda.

He also received the US Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005.

However, Rusesbagina fled Rwanda in 1996 following an assassination attempt on his life.

He created a political party while in exile called the Rwandan Democratic Party (PDR)

Paul Rusesabagina was named the vice-president of a politico-military movement MRCD in 2018 which has an armed wing FLN. The FLN had claimed responsibility for several attacks in Rwanda.
