Woman Sells Two-Week-Old Baby for N4,000,000 , paid N600,000 to the mother
A 26-year-old woman, Rachael, has confessed to selling her two-week-old baby for N600,000 due to financial hardship. However, investigations revealed that the child was later sold for N4 million to a 42-year-old woman seeking adoption, while Rachael received only a fraction of the sum.
Rachael, a resident of Asaba, Delta State, was paraded alongside two accomplices by the Delta State Police Command, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe.
Struggles Led to Desperate Decision
Rachael, who has another child—a male toddler, explained that she struggled to care for both children alone. She revealed that the father of the newborn denied paternity, leaving her to fend for herself throughout the pregnancy.
“I gave the baby away because I was the only one taking care of her,” she said.
To survive, she took on menial jobs, cleaning houses and doing chores in people’s compounds. Feeling overwhelmed, she sought help and was introduced to a woman who offered financial assistance in exchange for the child.
“The woman gave me N600,000 and asked me to ‘settle’ her, so I gave her N30,000,” Rachael admitted.
The Middlewoman’s Confession
The intermediary (whose identity remains undisclosed) confessed to selling the baby for N3.5 million after giving Rachael the N600,000. She also claimed the mother had expressed interest in using the money to start a business.
Meanwhile, the 42-year-old buyer, who had paid N4 million, believed she was undergoing a legal adoption process. She claimed she was assured that the necessary adoption documents were being processed.
Police Investigations Ongoing
The police are currently investigating the baby trafficking scheme to identify all involved parties and ensure justice is served. Authorities have also emphasized the illegality of child sales and warned individuals seeking adoption to follow the proper legal channels.
